The Des Moines class gun cruiser where the largest and most powerful 203mm gun cruisers ever built, at 17 000 ton and a crew of 1738 these ships where fearsome warships. Today with modern missiles they serve a better role as infantry support ships for amphibious landings. Two ships where built, the Des Moines which served as the flagship for the Sixth Fleet in Mediterranean and Salem which served in the Atlantic.

The HMS Diadem of the British Royal Navy was commissioned in 1944 then sold to Pakistan in 1956 after being refitted at the HM Dockyard, Portsmouth . It was renamed to Babur (C 84) by the Pakistani parliament.
