Originally classified as heavy cruisers. It went a major conversion in 1959 with all armament and structure being removed. A new structure made of aluminum in order to reduce weight and improve stability was fitted and the Albany was reclassified as a Guided Missile Cruiser, CG.

Andrea Doria class of helicopter cruisers of the Marina Militare were Italy 's first major new designs of the post-WWII era.
The class consisted of two vessels, Andrea Doria and Caio Duilio, both commissioned in 1964 and in service into the late 1980s. A third, Enrico Dandolo (C555), was cancelled.
