In 1961 an agreement was signed with India and a factory was setup in Avadi, near Madaras in India to produce the Mark 1 Vickers MBT as the Vijayanta, which means victory tank. This resulted in the first one rolling of the line in 1969. The Vijayanta, which was first inducted in the 1970s, has now considerably aged. It has limited cross- country mobility, is prone to overheating in the desert and carries the 105 mm gun.
Variants: A Vijayanta-130 was built installing a much improved 130mm canon. |

After the 1967 conflict Israel experienced that mobility was no substitute for armour protection. It therefore concentrated on local arms production and went into designing the Merkava main battle tank. The first tank rolled off the production plant and was fitted in the Israeli 7 th Armoured Brigade in 1979. The tank's hull is built of a layers; the steel layer is fitted with a layer of diesel in the middle, this gives protection from HEAT projectiles and ATGWs. Further more the low silhouette gives it a low visibility. Overall this tank was very advanced for its time. |

The Merkava 2 entered production in 1982. It main improvements to the Merkava 1 is added protection on sides and front and a special armour on the hull front. The 60mm mortar is fitted externally. The Centauro tank destroyer was designed to carry out tactical reconnaissance and territorial defence tasks. Tracked by wheeled 8 x 8 the main mission of the Centauro is the protection of lighter vehicles and units. The Italian Army has decided to procure two types of combat vehicle, tracked main battle tanks and wheeled armoured vehicles. To meet the specifications for vehicles for intervention in classic battlefield operations, a second-generation battle tank and an infantry fighting vehicle have been developed. The Ariete CI is currently being brought into service and studies are being carried out for an advanced second or third-generation battle tank. The Italian Army took delivery of its first Ariete main battle tank in December 1995. Ariete has a crew of four, a combat weight of 52 tonnes, a maximum speed of 65 km/h, a 550 km range and is able to surmount 60% gradients. It comes mounted with a 120 mm gun, integrated fire control system with laser rangefinder and a 7.62 mm machine gun. It will also be fitted with a stabilised panoramic periscope with night and day sight (infrared camera) and a digital fire control system and other advanced technological facilities. |
